"They were also used for fighting dogs because other dogs had a hard time hurting them due to their loose and thick skin,” Ylva said. “By all accounts, though, the Shair-peis had to be drugged in order to get them to fight because they are not naturally aggressive."
Shair-peis had begun to die out in Communist China due to the high taxes that are levied on anyone owning a dog. Breeders in this country were encouraged to take Shair-peis because of the low number of dogs left.
