Illiteracy is no small problem in America.
About one adult in five cannot read a job application or a street sign. That translates into about 27 million Americans defined as functional illiterates, unable to read a newspaper or a book, directions or instructions, fill out a driver’s license application or credit form.
The problem gets a special look during Illiteracy Week, Sept. 9-16.
Rappahannock County residents are offered a more thorough examination into illiteracy during a national program to combat the problem.
Locally, a slide presentation is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Gay Street Theatre.
The show, developed by the Literacy Volunteers of America, offers training and technical assistance in organizing local volunteer literacy
