7 die over weekend
State police reported crowded highways Monday as Virginians returned home from Labor Day weekend trips, and the holiday period’s fatality count in the state climbed to seven.
Last year police recorded 13 highway deaths in Virginia over the three-day holiday. The counting period began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Monday.
State police reported these fatal accidents:
• Fernando Flores Balatbat, 39, assigned to the USS Oak Ridge, died at the scene of a 7:50 a.m. crash Sunday on U.S. 58 near Virginia 650 in Southampton County. Police said Balatbat was killed when his car ran off the highway and struck a tree.
• Doris Young, 55, of Norfolk, died at 11:08 p.m. Saturday at Norfolk General Hospital. The car in which she was riding had jumped the curb on a Norfolk city street and ran into a light pole about 21/2 hours earlier.
• Mark Charlie Irving, 69, of Alton, died at the scene of an accident in Halifax County at 8:25 p.m. Saturday. He was a passenger in a car that ran off the right side of Virginia 751, struck a tree and overturned.
• Elverd Columbus McLamb II, 24, of Tampa, Fla., was riding his motorcyle on U.S. 17 in York County when he collided with a truck Friday. He died at Newport News General Hospital at 6:36 p.m. Saturday.
, • Steven J. James, 24, of Virginia Beach, was killed at 1:27 p.m. Saturday in Norfolk when he failed to negotiate a.turn with his motorcycle and smashed into a building.
