content with the novelty of dorm life and British TV. The college very generously provided a VHS, enabling the students to watch such literary films as “Tess” (based on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D'Urbennlles).
From the beginning the classes went well, for jiving in England apparently provided the necessary motivation for students to learn about British literature, history and geography. An item of intense study in literature class was Shakespeare’s T roil us and Cressida, the play that the group later saw at the Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Located midway between Dartmoor and the English Channel, Newton Abbot is ideally situated for interesting half-day trips and excursions, One of the most memorable trips was the four-hour hike on the Moor led by a sprightly old gentleman who was an expert on the geography and history of England’s largest national park.
Other excursions included a Saturday trip to the cathedral city of Exeter; a visit to Buckfast Abbey, a re-constructed medieval monastery, and trips to the seashore at nearby Torquay. One of the favorite outings was an excursion by boat down the Dart River to Dartmouth with return by steam railway along the Channel cliffs.
The two-day excursion to Stratford afforded the group an opportunity to visit Oxford, Banbury, Coventry and Warwick Castle. A side trip to Berkeley Castle, where Edward II came to an inglorious
