Rafael Brand has spent the past two weeks getting used to the "wilderness” — Rappahannock County.
Rappahannock may not seem like much of a wilderness to those who call this place home, hut Rafael noticed the often spaces and distances between houses right from the start.
That is just one of the more obvious differences between Kappa hannock and Seedorf, Switzerland. “Everything here is spread out more, and the houses are not as close together,” Rafael said. “The mountains here are not as high as at home, either.”
Rafael, a thin teenager with brown hair and eyes, will spend his junior year at Rappahannock County High School learning about American culture by experiencing it while he experiences American family life in the home of Richard and Pat Helmer.
Rafael arrived in Washington, I). C., for his extended first visit to the U.S. late on Aug. 22 due to an unexpected delay in New York. The Helmers introduced him to Rappahannock at 1 a.m. the following day.
