For one of the excursions — to the Arthurian country of Glastonbury, Wells and South Cadbury (the probable site of Camelot) — the Lynns hired two mini-buses and did the driving themselves. On this trip, the students also visited Thomas Hardy’s Casterbridge (Dorchester) where they were lucky enough to stumble onto the ruins of a Roman townhouse.
As the stay at Daracombe drew to a close, the college entertained with a lavish afternoon Devon “cream tea” and an evening English cheese and cider party (eight different local cheeses washed down by “Strongbow”).
The summer program in England concluded with a three-day stay in London, where the students saw all the sights, including the infamous London Dungeon, shopped at Harrods and mastered the complexities of the London “tube.”
Minor nuisances of the trip included a sprained ankle on the Moor, a lost passport and the vagaries of “ English weather. The program on the whole, however, was an enormous success, and most students indicated a desire to return next year.
Also next year, the trip will be opened to students in the public school system as well.
Accommodations have been booked again for next year for what promises to be an even richer and more experienced “Wakefield-in-England.”
