Virtually everyone who participated in the five-week Wakefield-inEngland summer program agrees that it was an extraordinary educational experience, far exceeding expectations and worth repeating in the years ahead.
Thp adventure began at Dulles Airport on July 6, when 24 students accompanied by three teachers boarded the evening Pan Am flight to London.
Arriving the next morning at Heathrow, the group was met by a specially chartered bus from Devon. Although the morning was bright and sunny, a cool breeze provided welcome relief from the oppressive heat left behind in Virginia.
It had been decided in advance that there would be some low-key sightseeing on the journey down to Devon, with stops in Salisbury and Stonehenge. Arriving in Salisbury at lunch time, the students eiyoyed wandering around the busy market square shopping and sampling their first English food.
The visit to Salisbury Cathedral was the first experience many of the group had of Gothic architecture. The lofty spire of the cathedral and the peaceful cloisters did not fail to impress.
