It was a cool, overcast day. There would be no chance for excuses about the heat, or my personal favorite, “The sun was in my eyes.”
I was nervous as I entered the court for my first game in the preliminaries of the 25th Annual Rappahannock Labor Day Mixed Doubles Handicapped Whistle Cup Tournament. My partner, Bobby Settle, had picked me, by the luck of the draw, to be his handicap.
The preliminary games were held Sunday on the private courts of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kilpatrick, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Parrish, Judge and Mrs. Rayner Snead, Mr. and Mrs. Fanning Baumgardner and Dr. and Mrs. Werner Krebser.
As I prepared myself mentally for the humiliation I knew I would soon suffer on the Baumgardner court, I noticed that all of the newcomers to the tournament had slightly strained expressions. The tournament “pros,” however, were
