floor and shot. Her style may not win her any points, but her rate of success should certainly add some to the Rappahannock side of the scoreboard.
“She shoots kind of like a frog,” said the coach. “But I’m not going to change it,” a sure sign that the end justifies the means. Atkins may kick her feet out to the side when she shoots, but the junior guard will be asked to do a lot of that this fall.
Wendy Stringfellow, known as “Bean” to her friends, looks to be the fifth starter. After attending basketball camp at Virginia Tech during the summer, Stringfellow could lead the rebounding charts often.
“She’s an excellent rebounder,” said Voorhees. “That and her defense are her two strong suits.”
Kristi Pendleton, who also spent part of her summer on the Blacksburg basketball courts, will get better as the season progresses.
“She gets better every day,” said the coach, and with the fact that she “shoots well,” Pendleton could become a vital weapon in a district that employs a lot of zone defenses. A junior, Pendleton is coachable, according to the man who should know.
“She’ll do anything you ask her to,” said Voorhees.
Tracy Sutphine, a 5-8 junior, will make a contribution rebounding — “she knows how to box out,” said Voorhees — and shooting, when she’s hot. “She’s a streak shooter,” the coach said.
Gina Manwaring, a junior, will make a contribution, but not until a back injury he; is and allows her to play. She was not practicing last week.
