RICHMOND — The Fraternal Order of Police, representing 6,500 Virginia law enforcement officers, has entered the statewide political arena for the first time to give its endorsement to this year’s Democratic ticket.
The endorsements, announced last week, went to former Attorney General Gerald L. Haliles for governor, state Sen. L. Douglas Wilder of Richmond for lieutenant governor and Del. Mary Sue Terry of Patric k for attorney general.
“We need the experience and dedication that these candidates bring with them,” George N. Austin Jr. of Poquoson, F.O.P. president, told a news conference.
He said both Democratic and Republican candidates were interviewed before the endorsement decision was made.
“Our process was thorough. Our research was in depth. Gerald Rabies, Doug Wilder and Mary Sue Terry were determined to have the best qualifications and the ability to be most representative to the needs of the F.O.P.,” Mr. Austin said.
He said neither race, sex nor political party were considered in making the endorsements.
