Rafael has been thrown into everything he wanted when he decided to participate in the “Youth for Understanding” program. “I am doing it for the experience and to learn the language better,” Rafael said.
He has to pause and think before speaking, but he does eventually make his meaning clear. His English is amazingly clear for someone who studied the language for only two years, three times a week for 45 minutes.
Rafael’s English teacher encouraged him to participate in the program. “He spent a year in this country, and he talked about it a lot," Rafael said.
Rafael's native language is Swiss/German, and at least one of his teachers at RCHS is taking that into consideration. His English teacher told him that, on vocabulary tests, he can write the German word if he is really stumped. The teacher will then use a German dictionary to grade his tests.
Although he will continue to work on his English, Rafael already knew how to speak the international language of chocolate. “He brought
