Mr. Baliles and Ms. Terry attended the news conference. Mr. Wilder was campaigning in northern Virginia.
“I’ve fought for tougher criminal laws. I've labored to bring to law enforcement officers the respect they deserve,” Mr. Baliles said.
His brother is a deputy sheriff in Patrick County and he has a cousin who is a state trooper stationed in Martinsville.
Mr. Baliles said his anti-crime record is a strong one whereas that of his Republican opponent, Wyatt B. Durrette, “is filled with inconsistencies.
“1 believe the people of Virginia have tired of my opponent’s attempt to substitute rhetoric for record,” he said.
Don Harrison, Mr. Durrette’s press secretary, said Mr. Baliles was “continuing his flagrant distortion of Wyatt’s record, a tactic he consistently uses.”
Ms. Terry, a former Patrick County prosecutor, said law enforcement would be her top priority if elected attorney general.
“The fight against crime must be led by those with the most experience,” she said.
