witchcraft
To the editor:
As a radical feminist and one who practices the Old Religion, variously called Craft Wicca, witchcraft and paganism, I would like to respond to recent letters in your paper.
There are those who are entirely mistaken in thinking that patriarchal religion can be reconciled or synthesized with feminist spirituality.
The Great Mother, the Triple Godess is not some sort of helpmate in some sort of holy nuclear family scheme. She is all powerful and independent in her own right.
Let me say right now that the witchcraft I speak of is not devilworship. Satanism is reverse Christianity. Doctrines of sin and guilt, atonement and salvation are not what we are into as witches. Humankind is not lost and depraved, waiting for some sort of savior or father-figure, a cosmic Rambo to get us out of the mess we are in.
It is not the Falwells and the Sun Moons and the various gurus that have the answer. Like my sister, Rita Mae Brown says, “You can no longer look for the answer. You are the answer.”
Mr. (Peter) Holley seems to be depending on a patriarchal deity in drag as the answer. We say no to the patriarchy in all its guises.
Once, I, myself subscribed to the doctrine of total nonviolence. I do so no longer. There are some evils worse than violence, and some violence is preferable to other violence. One cannot equate bombing Asian or Latin American peasants to soothe some politician’s ego with defending the safety of one’s self or loved ones from a homicidal maniac like a Hitler or Manson.
No one has the right to tell oppressed peoples how to liberate themselves, whether they be the Colonies of 1775 or black Soyth African or Afghani peasants today. Or,
