The third accident in u rnotith involving tractor-trailers on Rappahannock County highways claimed the life of Clyde H. Woodward, 75, of Amissville on Monday.
Mr. Woodward was the driver of a car struck head-on by a truck which jackknifed as the driver tried to avoid hitting a farm tractor. The accident occured about 11:45 a.m. Monday on Route 522 just north of Route 632 near Chester Gap.
Virginia State Trooper A. E. Hampton IV, who investigated the accident, explained that a truck owned by T. H. Compton, Inc. of Berkley Springs, W. Va., was southbound on Route 522. The operator, Gary Somers, rounded a curve and applied his brakes to avoid hitting a slow-moving farm tractor, also southbound, operated by Elijah Shank. Mr. Somers’ truck began to jackknife and the trailer hit Mr. Woodward’s 1978 Ford Fairmont, which was northbound on Route 522.
