Rappahannock’s supervisors acknowledged on Monday that they’re looking for a new landfill location in the county.
“We’re in the process of finding a site — someone to say they have a piece of property they’re willing to sell for a landfill,” said Supervisor Newbill Miller. “The process — once it becomes viable — won’t come out of a back room,” he added, promising that the public will be apprised as soon as a willing seller is found.
Local officials have known for some time of dwindling capacity at the privately owned and operated landfill near Woodville. Accordingly, the supervisors proposed last year to open a new site on 138 acres near Peyton Farms subdivision but the plan was abandoned when opposing landowners threatened suit.
Trash continued to be dumped at the Woodville landfill, and in April Robert Forman of the Health Department’s Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste Management directed that a closure plan be submitted, estimating that capacity would be reached at the end of June.
