More than 115,000 seedlings of various species were planted in Rappahannock County this spring. This reflects a 211 percent increase over last year.
White pine was the mtyor species with 104,000 seedlings planted. Other plantings include black walnut, sawtooth oak, Norway spruce, loblolly pine, autumn olive, Scotch pine, black locust, shrub lespedeza and Virginia pine.
The seedlings were planted for a variety of purposes. Nearly onethird of them were planted for Christmas tree production. Rappahannock County is ideally situated to take advantage of the strong Christmas tree market in northern Virginia. Other reasons for planting include forest products, erosion control, improvement of wildlife habitat and windbreaks.
