He said that the farm bill recently passed by the Congress will mostly affect major commodities: “most of which don’t impact farmers in the Seventh District. Agriculture (here) is more diverse — we’re probably better off with diversity.” He added that the decline in interest rates will be “a boon to...farms in general. Agriculture is still important... (it) has such an impact on the rest of the economy”.
Congressman Slaughter said that he has introduced a bill “which will provide a tax incentive for individuals to save money toward medical bills after retirement.” He explained that the bill is targeted toward younger workers. It will not affect the present revenues generated for Medicare, “but it would mean less claims against the present system.” He added that catastrophic illness coverage is included in the bill, “(since) it is impossible for most people to deal financially with catastrophic illness.”
