He noted that in an earlier study of the county’s trash problem, Rappahannock’s Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee had proposed a two-track policy: Pursue a long-range solution of transporting solid waste outside the county for disposal and in the short term, either find an adjoining locality willing to take the county’s trash at its landfill or haul it to the resource recovery facility at Harrisonburg.
Mr. Chuse recalled that the committee had recommended opening a new landfill here only as a last resort and then only after first developing — in public — site selection criteria.
By implication drawn from the board’s endorsement of sludge disposal at a new county landfill and its desire to locate a new animal shelter there, the decision has been reached to create another landfill in Rappahannock County, Mr. Chuse said. “But there’s been no public announcement.”
