In requesting an appropriation of $10,754 from the general fund — a 78 percent increase over the current year — Mr. Young said the money will be used to pay a full-time, certified librarian the same salary as a beginning teacher. “We’re asking for a catch-up and an updating, not an expansion,” Mr. Young assured the supervisors.
Health Department
Included in the $45,935 requested as the local share of the Health Department budget is an appropriation for a part-time dentist.
Director John Einarson emphasized, however, that the county is not being requested to fund the position. “But in order to get the state match of over 69 percent, the money has to be placed in the budget request,” he told the supervisors.
The money for the local share will actually come from the dental fund established and administered by Mary Botts Quaintance. By continuing the dental program on a part-time, 10 hours per week basis next year, the county will be able to retain the mobile dental unit and equipment, which belong to the state, Dr. Einarson explained.
Community college
In the only other presentation at Monday’s budget hearing, Robert Estabrook, Rappahannock’s representative on the Lord Fairfax Community College Board, pointed out that the $662 contribution requested from the county is more than matched by the $947 tuition scholarship presented each year to a Rappahannock student.
In addition, he said, 18 Rappahannock teachers recentlly took a computer course offered here by the college. An average of 24 gifted students take summmer courses every year at Lord Fairfax while other high school students have earned college credit through auditing courses at the community college, Mr. Estabrook said.
The supervisors took no action at Monday’s public hearing but set a budget work session for Wednesday, June 4. The budget is scheduled to be adopted at a special meeting on June 23.
