creative Audience anu r ecuback” will feature Shirley Paukulis, founder and director of the Artists’ Collaborative Studio in Lexington, Mass. Ms. Paukulis has been a choreographer, director and performer of dance, opera and theater in New York, Boston and Washington. She is the co-founder of the Dance Circle and the Cambridge Montessori School, and has taught dance therapy at Boston University. She assisted photographer Minor White in his Creative Audience class at MIT for seven years, and later presented workshops all around the country using his method of creative seeing and feedback.
The workshop is designed as a total experience for the participant, beginning with techniques to encourage perception and receptivity. Artist and audience are asked to respond directly to a work of art without prejudgement, interpretation or personal expectations. The result can be a deeply creative act in which audience and artist learn from each other what goes into the experience of a work of art.
“Artists need to be audiences for their own work, as well as for each other’s,” Sally Nash explained, “to stand back and examine objectively what they have created. This provides insight from a deep responsive place in themselves.
“With others as audience, the artist is opened up to a view of what he’s done. A good audience is able to help an artist see what’s in his work which he may not realize.”
Ms. Nash stresses'that khe’s talking about observattons which don’t communicate judgement or criticism but rather a personal response to content or form. The quality of dialogue which this allows creates another experience: that of the artist and his audience mutually responding directly to art, an ongoing creative act.
In August, Jeanne Drevas will lead a workshop in group construction of a work of art which will be displayed at RAAC’s Gay Street Theater. Jeanne’s works of art include pottery, woven sculptures and her own handmade house. This ArtIn will be held from 10:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, and participants are encouraged to bring found objects.
