But if that landowner has 300 acres and the county only condemns 80 acres for its landfill, the landowner can claim damages to the residual that could make the proposition as expensive as hauling solid waste to Harrisonburg, Supervisor Miller replied.
Werner Krebser said that Rappahannock’s citizens may prefer to pay for having the county’s trash shipped out, even if hauling means 18 cents on the tax rate. The board should answer that question before proceeding with a landfill, he maintained.
“We’d spend a third as much taking trash out of this county as we do on educating our children,” figured Supervisor Miller. “I don’t know about that.”
“Everybody creates trash; not everybody creates children,” quipped Mr. Reynolds.
“What’s the next step? What are you waiting for?” Mr. Chuse asked.
“A miracle!” Supervisor Lane replied.
“We’re looking, but we haven’t found a person yet willing to agree to sell or lease land for a landfill,” said Supervisor Miller, looking to the chairman for confirmation. Hubert Gilkey shook his head no.
