ative member services manager Francis Updike, occurred Monday morning when rapidly rising temperatures caused the snow on the power lines to melt and drop off. “The lines sprang like rubber bands,” he explained, “and if they touched they activated the circuit protectors.”

Mr. Updike’s assessment was echoed by Harry Saufley, area manager for Potomac Edison. “For some reason, the snow on the lower lines melted first, and they sprang up into the top lines, causing a short. We had a lot more problems because of that.”
