The Fodderstack 10K Road Race, which will be run for the ninth year on Saturday, April 18, was recently acclaimed as one of the top 10 kilometer races in the country by Running Times magazine.
In its December 1986 issue, Running Times listed 75 of the "most interesting” 10 kilometer races scheduled for the first half of 1987. The event, which has become an annual tradition for runners as far away as North Carolina, is infamous among veteran racers for ‘Tom Lee’s hill” which, at the four-mile mark, has taken the steam out of many a runner gunning for a personal record over the 6.2-mile course.
Perhaps out of sympathy for prospective entrants, Running Times makes no mention of the hill, but describes the course as “a country road (which) winds past tranquil orchards and stone-walled pastures.”
After running the race last year, Anne Nauman wrote, "This pastoral trek through the Blue Ridge foothills from one historic hamlet to another was as timeless as a visit to Brigadoon.”
Although pre-registration has not yet begun in emest, several perennial Fodderstack challengers are expected to return for another shot at the course. Frank Reynolds, sixtime winner of the Eva L. Smith Memorial, awarded to the first male and female Rappahannock County residents to finish, is expected be among the starters. Mr. Reynolds has run the race every year since its inception in 1979.
