The RAAC audience on Friday will see master drummers and dancers in traditional West African dress perform a dance calculated to demonstrate the strength and exuberance of field workers after a long day of physical toil. The dance, called “Akon-Kon” is from the Jiola people of Senegal and is a celebration of the anticipated good harvest.
“Mandiani” is a dance native to the Ballanto people, who live in Guinea-Bissau as well as Senegal. This dance is performed during the initiation of young West Africans to adulthood. Like the Akon-Kon, it is fastpaced and lively, one of the fastest traditional African dances known. Mandiani also includes acrobatics.
Tickets are available at the Gay Street Theater before the performance. Prices vary: $4.00 for students, $5.00 for RAAC members, and $6.50 for the general public. For more information, call the RAAC office at 675-3193.
