(69 percent), Richmond and Roanoke/Lynchburg (66 percent) and Tidewater (64 percent). Support was weakest in Southside and Southwestern Virginia (45 percent), the Nothera Neck/Peninsula (45 percent) and Central Piedmont (48 percent).
Men (40 percent) were more likely to oppose seat belt legislation than women (34 percent).
The poll also indicated that seat belt legislation will prompt more Virginians to buckle-up. Statewide, 56 percent of the respondents said they generally wear seat belts when they drive or ride in an automobile, but the percentage of those who say they would wear a seat belt if required by law jumps to 68 percent.
