Rappahannock’s varsity basket» ball team, having completed the regular season with a record of 11-9, began a bid for Bull Run District honors with a game at Page County I Wednesday night in the first round of the district tournament. The Panthers split with Page during the regular season, winning at home and dropping a close contest at Page last week by four points.
“I think we’ve been playing well enough to win,” commented coach Gary Leake, adding that “We need to polish a few rough edges before the tournament.”
Coach Leake said the team had set as a pre-season goal to finish in the top three in the district, and he said he was pleased overall with the team’s season. The Panthers finished the year in a four-way tie for third place in the district. “We struggled with injuries and sickness, and had some trouble playing away in district games.” (The Panthers dropped all six of their district games on the road.)
In addition, Coach Leake said, the team lost five games by a total of 16 points. “We seemed to be unable to win the close games — especially on the road.”
