On the Atlantic coast of Africa, the romantic and colorful state of Senegal has served as a thriving export center for those world citizens hungry for peanuts, rice, millet and sugar.
Senegal was settled by the French, and the merging of French and African cultures inspired a sophisticated and fun-loving people, with French architecture, a love for fine food and high fashion, a national tendency to eiyoy life, and an emphasis on music and dance.
The Rappahannock Association for The Arts and the Community (RAAC) is presenting a Senegalise dance company, Kancouran, at the Gay Street Theater on March 6 at 8:00. The public program of West African Dance will follow a March 5 performance in the Rappahannock County schools of the dances, as well as a program of West African geography, history, costume and storytelling.
