Police to try motorcycles
FAIRFAX — State police banished motorcycles in the 1950s, but have decided to bring them back for an experiment in traffic patrol and enforcement.
A one-year pUot program tentatively is to begin April 1, Sgt. F.D. Jones said last week. The plan calls for five specially trained troopers on motorcycles to patrol the interstate highways in Northern Virginia, and five more to work in Tidewater, he said.
In Northern Virginia, the motorcycles will be used to reach injured people more quickly, to keep traffic moving and especially to enforce restrictions in car pool lanes, Sgt. Jones said.
A prime assignment will be on Interstate 95 between Woodbridge and Springfield, where the shoulder becomes a fourth lane during rush hour and a barricade to emergency vehicles trying to get around cars.
In Fairfax County, where miles-long backups have become a way of life, police said the motorcycles get them through tight spots.
“They have gotten to an accident quicker than a cruiser,” said police spokeswoman Judy Dailey. “They also hide well from cars. That’s why they do a lot of traffic enforcement.”
Three new blue and gray Harley-Davidsons cycles — costing $11,200 apiece — were on display for Thursday’s announcement.
