He is reportedly facing stiff competition this year from several youthful challengers, including Rappahannock County High School senior Marley Hay, who smoked the competition during the fall crosscountry season. Mr. Reynolds refused to predict the winner of that showdown, saying only that “Marley and I have been friendly adversaries for the past several years. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather see have the Eva Smith trophy than Marley - except me.”
Tim Kearney, a Culpeper runner who warms up for the marathon season with the Fodderstack run, will almost certainly be among the entrants. Mr. Kearney was the winner of the event last year, finishing in a time of33:58.
The course record is held by Steve Pinard of Winchester. Set in 1985, a year when the thermometer stood at 92 degrees at race time, Mr. Pinard blazed across the finish line in 31:26.
Other county runners who will probably return to give the hometown run another crack include John Borgens, another marathon veteran who may give Mr. Reynolds more competition for the Eva L. Smith Memorial; Dennis Wingfield, a RCHS teacher who has in the past solicited pledges for several high school fundraising projects in conjunction with the run; Mary O’Meara, who last year took home her fourth Eva Smith trophy, and Merrill Strange, who in past years
