• A large majority of Virginians (71 percent) support Gov. Gerald Baliles’ proposal to return to taxpayers the “windfall” the state is expected to reap this year as a result of federal tax law changes.
• Nearly half (49 percent) of the state’s voters think the General Assembly is capable of monitoring its own members in regards to conflictof-interest voting. However, more than a third of the voters (35 percent) disagreed, and 16 percent did not express an opinion.
• Slightly more than half the survey respondents (51 percent) believe that censuring a member of the General Assembly is not adequate punishment for conflict-of-interest voting. Nearly a third (31 percent) said censure is sufficient punishment, and 18 percent expressed no opinion.
