To the editor:
Although we still have seven days remaining in this session, frayed tempers and pomposity came close this week to disrupting otherwise rational consideration of some of the issues remaining before us. While we deplore this outbreak of temper, I have to add that in a few cases, the outbursts were understandable if not admirable. State government is once again in the nanny business - in other words it’s determined to take care of you whether you like it or not.
Because of two bills passed within the last few days, you’ll now be required to wear a seatbelt when driving your cars and wear blaze orange during deer hunting season, even on our own property. I have no
quarrel with the common sense inherent in either of these personal safety measures, but both further infringe upon the rights of the individual to free choice.
And because now both new laws are chocked full of holes when it comes to enforcing them, I sincerely question whether they will accomplish what they’re supposed to do. For example, the seatbelt law only applies to the front seat driver and passenger - back passengers continue to have the right of choice.
