When his health became bad he was pushed aside and forgotten about by the members of the Fire Department he had worked so hard for. In 1980 when the Fire Department caught fire, he once again came through for them by getting one of the fire trucks out of the building that no one else could get started. Russell spent many years in and out of hospitals and never once did a member of the Department call or come visit him.
Several weeks before his death he learned of the Fire Department’s decision to vote the Auxiliary out. He became so upset that he told me if I should need a Rescue Squad, “do not call Amissville for anything, I have lost all respect for them!”
I would like to take this moment to say a special “thank you” to the Auxiliary for the kindness and consideration you showed Russell during his illness. He always enjoyed the food, flowers and cards that was sent to him. I told Russell about the beautiful roses that you sent him this last time while he was in the hospital. They brightened his room and put a smile on his face. They let his family and friends know that the work and time he devoted was not forgotten and lost by all.
