incorrectly stated that as a
child, Dr. Summers lived in a
house in Gid Brown Hollow
which is now the Gid Brown
Bible Church. Actually, at
that time the building was the
elementary school for Rappahannock
County’s black children,
located in what was
then known as Smedley, Va.

ASCS rules
change for
ACR program
To participate in the 1987 acreage reduction program for one crop on a farm, Linda P. Henry, County Executive Director for the Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) says producers will be prohibited from planting excess of the crop acreage base for each other program crop on the farm.
This year’s programs contain limited cross compliance provisions for wheat and feed grain. Cross compliance was not a requirement under the 1986 farm programs.
The 1987 programs also prohibit the production of alternate crops on acreage conservation reserve (ACR) land. These are the acres removed from crop production to meet the acreage reduction requirements. Grazing of ACR will be authorized if requested by the State ASCS committee, except during a five consecutive-month period, April 1 to October 1,1987 as designated by the committee. Haying is prohibited.
ASCS is currently conducting signup for the 1987 acreage reduction programs. Farmers who participate in the programs will be eligible to receive price support loans and defideny payments. Additionally, feed grain program participants will be eligible for land diversion payments. The signup period ends March 30.
