Jackson says
RICHMOND — The Rev. Jesse Jackson says Democrats must unite to regain the presidency in 1988, but he says it’s too early to announce whether he will seek the nomination.
Mr. Jackson made that comment to reporters after a half-hour closed meeting with Virginia’s black legislators Thursday. Mr. Jackson, who sought the Democratic nomination hi 1984, said he will decide by late spring whether to run again in 19%.
Mr. Jackson also briefly addressed the Virginia Senate and the House of Delegates.
The most crucial problem facing the nation, Mr. Jackson said at a news conference, is a pervasive form of “economic violence.” He said recent incidents of racial strife in New York, Alabama and Georgia also are bad, but such violence can be stopped because it is illegal. Economic violence, he said, is legal.
Factory closings, farm foreclosures and students’ inability to obtain loans are examples of economic violence, Mr. Jackson said.
“There’s a lot of agony in the land today,” Mr. Jackson said. “Our standard of living has dropped . . . there’s extreme anxiety.” He said the South in particular “must be liberated from excruciating poverty. ” j
