Sen. William F. Parkerson Jr. (D-Henrico), chairman of the Senate courts panel, and Del. C. Hardaway Marks (D-Hopewell), chairman of the House courts committee, said Friday they believe Judge Lawrence L. Koontz Jr. of the Court of Appeals is the leading candidate for Cochran’s seat.
Two other candidates, Winchester Circuit Judge Henry H. Whiting and former Attorney General William G. Broaddus, also have significant backing, several lawmakers said.
Godwin quits campaign
RICHMOND — Former Republican Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. has withdrawn as honorary co-chairman for Eddy Dalton’s state senate campaign, citing his long friendship with her opponent, Sen. William F. Parkerson Jr. (D-Henrico).
“You know of my admiration and respect for you,” Mr. Godwin wrote to the widow of former Republican Gov. John N. Dalton in a letter released Friday.
But Mr. Godwin said that because of his long political and personal friendship with Sen. Parkerson,“I have concluded it would be more appropriate for me to not be identified with the campaign.”
Last week, Mrs. Dalton announced the hiring of a campaign manager and released a list of supporters, including Mr. Godwin, former Gov. Linwood Holton, and U.S. Sens. John Warner and Paul Trible.
Sen. Parkerson, the senior member of the Senate, recently announced he would seek re-election.
In his letter, Mr. Godwin said he understood his backing of Mrs. Dalton wou ld not be revealed until &hgyf formally announce^ her casvdidacy in March.
