More than 12,000 citizens called the toll-free number between Thursday, Jan. 22, and Friday, Jan. 31, to check road conditions after three snowstorms hit the state. The highway helpline was begun in August 1986 to let citizens report highway maintenance and safety problems when they didn’t know which local office to cadi. It was expanded to include winter road condition reports later in the year.
