Candlelight concert Dec. 11
The Culpeper-Piedmont Choral Society will present its annual Christmas Candlelight Concert Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. at the Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West St. Music Director Lois Shanks has selected sacred, classical and contemporary Advent and Christmas music to be performed by the 58-voice chorus. The concerts are free and open to the public. ‘Dragnet’
The movie Dragnet will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13, at 7:30 each evening. The movie stars Dan Ackroyd, Tom Hanks and Dabney Coleman. Dan Ackroyd, the fast-talking whiz from “Saturday Night Live,” is the perfect choice for Dragnet. As the namesake nephew of Joe Friday, Ackroyd is an oral Uzi, with rapid-fire just-the-facts speech. Debuting director Tom Mankiewicz creates the required breakneck car chases and stunt tumbles around Ackroyd and Hanks, his streetwise, woman-ogling partner Pep Streebek. The script is a goldmine of one-liners. The movie is rated PG-13. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Christmas fruitcakes on sale
The Amissville Puritans are selling Christmas fruitcakes. This is one of two annual fundraising events sponsored by the Ruritans. Proceeds benefit youth baseball, scholarships for RCHS graduates and other projects. For more information contact any Amissville Ruritan member.
Fine gifts at Middle St.
The Middle Street Gallery in Washington is displaying fine arts and crafts for holiday gifts. Oil paintings and sculpture, baskets, cards, tree decorations and more are available from the members of this fine cooperative gallery. Gallery hours are Fridays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., through Jan. 3.
Gingerbread house classes
Ann Kolack, pastry chef at the Village Cafe, will be offering a class in the fun art of gingerbread house making Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Child Care and Learning Center. Gingerbread, candies, frosting and pastry bags are provided. All you need is your imagination and some kitchen tools from home.
The fee of $50 includes materials, lunch at the Cafe and your gingerbread house to take home. For more information and what to bring call Ann at 675-3877 or 675-3541.
Origami workshop
An origami (Japanese paper folding) workshop for ages 10 through adult will be held at the Middle St. Gallery on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 1-3 p.m. Students will learn to make paper cranes, frogs, boats, etc. as well as attempt the most complex origami creation, the crab. Ongami figures make colorful and intriguing Christmas ornaments. Robin Purnell will be the instructor. The fee for the workshop is $12, which includes materials. Christmas concert December 13
The Front Royal Oratorio Society’s Christmas program will be presented Sunday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 at the Presbyterian Church in Front Royal. The concert will include Handel’s Oh, Praise the Lord, Pergolesi’s The Magnificat and Rutter’s Joy to the World. Admission is free and a nursery will be available.
