Mental health and clinical services
Community Services runs family guidance clinics in Rappahannock and the other four counties of the planning district which offer a full range of services: individual, marital and group counseling, psychiatric and psychological assessment, chemotherapy, and if necessary, referral to an appropriate day, residential or inpatient program.
Substance abuse and prevention
“Boxwood is our equivalent of the Betty Ford Center,” said Mrs. Gorman. This facility south of Culpeper provides a 28-day treatment program for alcoholics and other substance abusers at a charge of $311 to financially eligible patients who can pay; for indigents, the Community Services Board pays that base fee. To be accepted at Boxwood, a patient must be medically indigent, which means he or she cannot have insurance to cover inpatient care or be able to pay cash at the going rate for private institutions.
Nearby private inpatient facilities for substance abusers - the Psychiatric Institute, Primavera and Springwood - charge $5,000 to $16,000 for 28 days, Mrs. Gorman said. The cost puts private care beyond the means of most people who do not have insurance coverage.
“Even with insurance, it usually takes two or three tries (in an inpatient program to beat a substance abuse problem) and insurance will generally cover only one stay in a calendar year,” Mrs. Gorman said. “Boxwood gives the average person who doesn’t have insurance, or whose insurance won’t pay, a chance to get help.”
Community Services also shares space - and costs of a 16-bed alcohol detoxification unit in Staunton and offers a women’s substance abuse program in Culpeper.
In addition, the services of a substance abuse specialist are provided at all five family guidance clinics.
