During this event, which is free, open to the public and usually attended by upwards of 20,000 spectators, a cannon blast signals the lighting of hundreds of candles in windows of the Historic Area’s more than 400 restored and reconstructed public and private buildings. An evening of merriment follows replete with an 18th-century-style fireworks display, outdoor singing, dancing and musical performances on stages located at the Palace, Capitol and Pow’der Magazine, each further illuminated by light from fiery cressets.
The period from Grand Illumination through New Year’s is chock full of things to do and see. Candlelight concerts and recitals are an almost daily occurrence. Special holiday lectures, films and decorating workshops are scheduled. Tours focusing on the wreaths, garlands and greens that decorate the Historic Area are offered each day. Carolers can be found singing on the steps of the Courthouse of 1770 at twilight. A Christmas exhibition at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center and holiday programs at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery draw visitors indoors. Other special activities include 18th-century comedies and 18th-centurystyle magic shows.
