An amazingly simple apparatus was used to produce a vital effect on Sam Griggs. Military anti-shock trousers, known as MAST, are used widely by rescue squads and hospitals to treat shock caused by blood loss.
When a patient suffers from heavy blood loss due to injury or internal bleeding, the brain and internal organs, heart and lungs, need the blood remaining in the body to survive.
"MASTshunts the blood from the legs into central circulation where it is needed to maintain vital organ function," explains Dr. Michael Bost, emergency physician at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
"Along with other methods, MAS T is used to reestablish, maintain, and stabilize blood pressure."
