“They’re planning on five answering positions at their primary answering point plus three secondary answering points. They’re looking at a lot more equipment,” said Mr. Hammond, adding that Rappahannock will probably have just a single position at its one answering point in Washington. “The expensive parts of this are the answering points and answering positions.”
In addition, Mr. Poling said, the fire and rescue stations do not have to be provided printers; the printers can be added to the system at a later date, or not at all.
“Is it possible to design a program so that the entire cost is cov-! ered by the charges on the monthly' telephone bills, excluding maybe: some front money that the board; might have to put up?” asked Super-; visor Miller.
“Yes, it is,” Mr. Poling replied.
"That’s all I wanted to know.”
Once the design and staffing; questions are resolved, total cost can! be projected and then the board can! set a tariff to cover that amount, Mr.; Hammond explained. “You decide; how much to levy against the tele-; phone user - not CenTel,” he told' the supervisors. “CenTel is only col-! lecting the money for the county.! That is the fund you will be working with to pay for the entire system. ”
If the decision is made to install! the system, “it will take two years to! do the job, so you should be getting on shortly, in three to six months,” Mr. Poling said. At Supervisor Henry’s suggestion, the board agreed to appoint a committee, including Sheriff John Henry Woodard, representatives from the county’s Fire and Rescue Association and residents from each magisterial district, to look further into the installation of an enhanced 911 system. The supervisors will bring the names of nominess to a special board meeting set for Tuesday, Dec. 15.
“This is not just something for one or two people. It’s for everyone,” noted Mr. Poling.
All six county fire and rescue departments endorse the system, according to Frankie Huff, president of the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue Association. “We could save more time, and with time so important in emergencies, maybe we could save a life or two.”
