State-of-the ait medical equipment adds another dimension to the care of mothers and babies. The hospital is grateful for the donation of some of this equipment by the CMH Auxiliary and other civic organizations. When the mother enters the hospital, she is assisted by gentle and understanding nurses in the homelike birthing room or in the labor and delivery rooms. Outfitted for a family-centered birth, the birthing room is decorated with cheerful wallpaper, ruffled curtains, television, stereo, recliner, and birthing bed for labor and delivery in the same room.

The mother’s coach may stay with her throughout labor and delivery in the birthing room, labor and delivery rooms, and during a caesarean. For family-centered births, many families gather in the birthing room following delivery to see the new baby.

Mothers stay in softly decorated semi-private rooms. Wallpaper and carpet in peach and green create a comfortable environment where mothers can rest and greet their families and friends. For mothers whose physicians approve, there is an option of a one day stay.

Babies may visit with their mothers anytime, and fathers are welcome to visit anytime. Siblings and grandparents are invited to visit during visiting hours.

“It is important for the family to be together as much as they like during this time. We like family bonding to begin immediately after birth and encourage both parents to hold the baby in the delivery room,” says Wilma Myers. “We also instruct new mothers in many aspects of infant care —breastfeeding, bottle feeding, holding, handling, and bathing babies.
