When Brevard and Gay Wallace found they were expecting their third child, they knew what kind of pregnancy and birth experience they wanted.
“It was very important that our two children be involved and that we experience birth as a family," said Dr. M. Brevard Wallace, a family practice physician in Culpeper. The Wallaces’ children, Susan, 10, and Matthew, 8, were bom at Culpeper Memorial Hospital, and the Wallaces knew CMH was the place to have their third child.
“We know the doctors here are excellent, and we were confident that Gay and the baby would receive good care,” said Brevard. “In addition we wanted to be together and not have to drive to another town.”
“Everytime I have been to CMH, the care has been wonderful,” said Gay.
With the improvements that have taken place in recent years in the Matemal/Child Health Unit, the Wallaces had the family-centered birth they wanted.
Gay found the birthing room at CMH to be a fine place to have her baby with Brevard by her side.
“I liked the homey surroundings,” she said. “Brevard and I talked for hours. He encourages me — he is so calm. And, of course, Dr. Godfrey is very nice and patient.”
There is also advanced monitoring equipment for mothers and babies. “A machine automatically monitored my blood pressure and pulse,” said Gay. “The nurses were super.”
Following the birth of eight pound, seven ounce Davis Wallace on September 27, Susan and Matthew visited their parents in the birthing room to see their new brother. “They were so excited,” said Gay and Brevard.
The following evening, Susan and Matthew and Gay's mother, Mary Eastham Hodges of Charlottesville, gathered in the CMH Stork Club with Gay and Brevard for a private dinner of Beef Wellington, Coquilles St. Jacques, and wine for the adults and fried chicken for the children. It was a festive, family celebration of the birth of a new baby, and everyone cuddled young Davis and took family pictures before they went home.
