Easily and rapidly applied, MAST is fitted in three sections, one for each leg and an abdominal section. The garment is made of a polyvinyl fabric and closes securely with velcro. It is inflated with a foot pump.

In addition to restoring blood pressure, the pressure created by MAST also acts to reduce bleeding and to stabilize certain fractures.

The garment remains on the patient while other measures are initiated, such as the administration of intravenous fluids and blood, until blood pressure stabilizes, or, if necessary, surgery begins.

Originally developed seventy years ago, MAST was used in Viet Nam on trauma vidtims during evacuation to surgical hospitals.
