Dukakis narrowly defeated Rev. Jesse Jackson, 132 votes to 129. Sen. Al Gore Jr. of Tennessee, who had pinned his hopes on Super Tuesday, ran third with Si votes.
In percentage terms, Gov. Dukakis received 34 percent of the county total, while Rev. Jackson finished close behind with 33 percent, followed by Sen. Gore with 21 percent.
Gov. Dukakis and Rev. Jackson ran neck-and-neck through most ol the county, with Gov. Dukakis receiving 38 votes in Hampton District, compared to Rev. Jackson’s 3(1. In Amissville the totals were Dukakis 24, Jackson 18, and in Scrabble it was 28-2(1, Gov. Dukakis winning that precinct as well.
Only in Flint Hill and Sperryville did Rev. Jackson prevail, beating Gov. Dukakis by 25 to 17 in Flint Hill and 24 to 17 in Piedmont. In Chester Gap, Gov. Dukakis was the winner — while Rev. Jackson did not receive a single vote of the 23 Democratic ballots cast in that precinct.
Statewide, Rev. Jackson wqji Virginia with 43 percent of the vote followed by Sen. Gore with 23 percent and Gov. Dukakis with 20 Der cent. •
