Good government
On Monday, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion to change the times of the board's monthly meetings. Beginning in May, the board will meet at 2 p.m., rather than 10 a.m., and any public hearings will be held beginning at 7 p.m. The date will remain the first Monday of the month.
The change is designed to allow more county residents to participate in the meetings, to attend the public hearings, and to express their opinions.
It’s a great idea, and we commend the board for its attention to the requests from residents to provide greater input into decisions. In a time when officials and agencies seem to be more interested in barring rather than informing the public, Rappahannock’s decision blows like a fresh breeze through the musty fog of cloakroom politics which so often lends a certain foul stench to the decision-making process.
Although the change won’t mean that everyone will be satisfied by the decisions of the board — any more than they are now — at least it should offer a chance for the supervisors to hear the opinions of those of their constituents who can’t take off from work to attend daytime meetings.
We hope, as well, that more residents will take the time to attend the meetings. The supervisors have acted to accommodate their constituents — we hope they care enough to become involved.
