“It’s a project that has been approved over and over and over again,” countered Phil Irwin. “It has been subjected to repeated reviews in this community.” He described the stretch between Washington and Sperryville as the most densely traveled road in the county. “The road is dangerous, and the road is slow. Motorists are tempted to be careless.”
“Opponents of the project ask ‘why destroy new countryside?’ Safety, for one reason,” Mr. Irwin said. But he maintained that rather than destroying the rural character of the county/the dual-laning would allow motorists to “relax and enjoy the exposed views of the mountains . . . There’s no good excuse not to let this plan continue.”
Commissioner Bob Anderson noted that motorists entering Rt. 211 with a left turn from Rt. 622 “better get off the road pretty quick” because approaching vehicles “can’t see you.”
