As for safety factors, he maintained that the two sharp left turns at the end of a dual-laned highway in Sperryville will pose a greater hazard than the traffic load on the unimproved stretch between the village and Washington.
Plans for by-passing Sperryville are “already on record,” replied Mr. Stokes, referring to the Highway Department’s briginal proposal for building a spur through the C. E. Johnson property to the west of the village.
“But we’ve been tol'd that the supervisors have been assured by the highway department that they’re not going to put a by-pass around Sperryville,” said Mr. Cadwaleder.
“The people killed that idea,” confirmed Commissioner Werner Krebser. He cautioned that “building big roads” increases development pressure and while supporting the Rt. 211 project, he also warned that the county will have to ensure it can “stick with the zoning and subdivision ordinances (to) make sure the highway isn’t a vehicle for subdivisions.”
