After clearing the fence at the bottom of the mountain. Tingles Image lost his footing and fell, while Classic Ribot forged into the lead. The leaders tired and, as the rest of the field made their final challenges, Mr. Worrall let his horse have his head and they ran smoothly between the posts for a clear win over Grab the Money and Run with Mike Elmore and Cookin 'N Loo kin with Paul B. Cramer Jr.
Another young rider, Mary Grachus, got her first taste of victory in a pony race earlier that day. This was 12-year-old Mary’s first race ever and the Keswick Hunt rider hopes to ride in many more.
“My mom asked me one day if I wanted to do it, so I just decided it would be fun,” she said.
Gus Brown of The Plains won the large pony division on Down Homer, a pony he campaigned throughout the 1987 season. Gus has worked with his pony for months in preparation for the racing season, and though only two pony races will be held in Virginia this spring, he hopes to ride on the Delaware Valley Point-to-Point Circuit.
