• Check valuable trees and shrubs for tent caterpillar egg masses and bag worms. Remove them to reduce the number of destructive pests this spring. Tent caterpillar egg masses are gray and varnished looking and form a collar around twigs, while bagworms look somewhat like a pine cone hanging at the end of branches.
If bird feeding has been a favorite activity this winter, order trees and shrubs which provide cover and small fruits for your feathered friends. Consider species such as crabapple, hawthorn, holly, dogwood, and pyracantha which can help lure hungry birds from cultivated fruits, if planted on the opposite side of the yard.
• If you have a sandy soil which dries out extra fast in the summer, you may want to experiment with gardening in a depression. Prepare the soil in a hole or trough several inches below the surface of the paths to reduce evaporation and make watering easier.
• Plan on hanging a few vegetables on your porch or deck for a convenient harvest. Bush cucumbers, small tomato varieties, and even lettuce and spinach can be grown in hanging baskets. Many herbs including chives, parsley, and thyme are also well-suited to baskets.
